RIKON designed, manufactured and supplied two 63-tonne Double Jib Level Luffing cranes for the İsdemir steel works on İskenderun Bay in Turkey, the country’s only integrated steel plant producing both long and flat products, part of the OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group. Custom-engineered to the customer’s specific technological requirements and operating conditions, each crane is built to the highest crane duty classification (A8) with increased safety margins, uses fully electric drives with no hydraulic mechanisms, and was loaded fully assembled onto a heavy-lift vessel, reducing installation and commissioning time on site. The project opened a new export route into Turkey for RIKON and highlights its ability both to build high-capacity portal cranes and to deliver them by sea in fully assembled condition, strengthening its position among Europe’s specialist manufacturers of heavy lifting equipment.

The Challenge
The İsdemir steel works, Turkey’s only integrated plant producing both long and flat products and part of the OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group, required high-capacity lifting equipment built to the highest duty classification, with increased safety margins for the continuous, high-intensity operation of an integrated steel plant, combining heavy lifting performance with energy-efficient electric operation and fast deployment at a working site on the Mediterranean coast.
The Solution
RIKON delivered two RPS-1600 Double Jib Level Luffing cranes, each with a 63-tonne lifting capacity, a 36-metre outreach and fully electric drives with no hydraulic systems. Built to the highest crane duty classification (A8) with increased safety margins, the cranes were developed specifically for the plant rather than adapted from a standard design. They were fully assembled at RIKON’s Riga facility and loaded in one piece onto a heavy-lift vessel, shortening installation and commissioning at the destination port.
Project Significance
The delivery to İsdemir marks a significant milestone for RIKON, opening a new export route into the Turkish market and demonstrating its ability to build and ship large portal cranes in fully assembled condition, an operation made possible by the dedicated assembly berth at its Riga facility. İsdemir is a strategic national asset within the OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group, part of OYAK, one of Turkey’s largest industrial conglomerates.
